MICHELLE JEZIERSKI

Michelle Jezierski is a German-American painter born and based in Berlin. Her work sits at the intersection of abstraction and landscape, built from luminous color fields disrupted by geometric interferences. Raised in a family of professional classical musicians, she initially considered a path in music herself before turning to visual art at seventeen; she went on to study under sculptor Tony Cragg at the Berlin University of the Arts, followed by a scholarship at Cooper Union in New York where she studied with Amy Sillman, before completing her studies with Valérie Favre. That musical upbringing still surfaces in her visual approach. She describes the geometric structures in her work as providing rhythm and structure in the same way a beat does in music. Working primarily in oil and mixed media on canvas, she constructs compositions that feel both architectural and atmospheric. Light seems to pass through cut planes of color rather than sit on the canvas. More recently, she has extended this visual language into ceramics, carrying the same interplay of fragmentation and light into three-dimensional form.

For Jezierski, these landscapes function less as depictions of an outer world than as metaphors for internal, psychological space: fragmented and open-ended, they resist a single fixed reading and instead act as a kind of mirror, leaving room for the viewer to project their own mood, memory, or state of mind onto the scene. Her practice has been anchored by solo exhibitions including Verge at Schwartzsche Villa Berlin and Lapse at Galerie Jahn Munich, supported by scholarships from the Kunstfonds Foundation and NICA, and consolidated in her 2022 monograph Simultaneous Spaces, which frames her ongoing interest in space as something experienced in fragments and folded moments rather than a single fixed view.
