DANIEL GRÜTTNER

DANIEL GRÜTTNER

Daniel Grüttner is a contemporary German abstract painter and sculptor based in Berlin. Born in 1979 in Rotenburg an der Wümme, Germany, he is highly regarded for his energetic, vibrant oil paintings and a conceptual process that blends painting and continuous drawing. Before pursuing art full-time, Grüttner initially studied human medicine at the University of Leipzig from 2000 to 2002. He then shifted his focus completely to the arts, studying painting at the prestigious Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Professor Siegfried Anzinger from 2002 to 2008, where he graduated as a master student. Following his graduation, he served as an instructor for painting at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf between 2012 and 2014.

Grüttner’s work is celebrated for its vibrant oil canvases, deliberate mark-making, and high kinetic energy. Critics describe his canvases as a battleground of intense brushstrokes and lines that explore the boundaries between abstraction, depth, and flatness. A core component of his contemporary process is the interplay between painting and drawing. He frequently creates diary-like drawings parallel to his major oil paintings. These sheets act as a real-time commentary on his studio progress rather than mere preliminary sketches.

Grüttner has exhibited widely since 2005. In early 2026, he was featured in a landmark solo exhibition titled “Out of the Web” hosted by the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München inside the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. The exhibition formally introduced his extensive body of drawings alongside his paintings to examine the role of drawing in 21st-century art.
